Older beds were designed simply for the purpose of giving a place for somebody to lay down and relax. It used to be the softer the better for most. Usually, the cause of back problems from a bed are due to a person sleeping on an old mattress or a cheap flimsy one that can cause the spine to rest out of alignment while they sleep. When you lay in bed at night, you want to keep your spine straight throughout your slumber so you wake up without any aches or pains.
Older coil spring mattresses will sag in the middle from continued use. Broken or damaged box springs can also cause this to happen, which ultimately leads to you sleeping in a curved position. Your spine is twisted and you wake up feeling the effects of it.
The Wrong Mattress
Different people require different mattresses for the best spine positioning. Inner-spring mattresses don’t provide the ability to contour to your body weight nearly as well as memory foam, latex or some air mattresses. Even if you have a memory foam or latex mattress, you may have the wrong firmness. Heavier people or those with joint problems should get denser mattresses while lighter people in good health don’t need the high density beds.
Back, Side and Front Sleepers
The way you sleep will also lead to back pains. There is nothing majorly wrong with sleeping in a certain position. We all have a natural position that we feel the most comfortable with. What you want to do is find the right mattress for the position that you sleep in. There are better mattresses for side sleepers than there are for people who lay on their stomachs.

This, for the most part is dependent on the person. Like I said earlier, you should avoid inner spring mattresses.
